Yes, you are willing and able to parent a child of African American descent...but you fear one thing. HER HAIR. Black child hairstyles and haircare require different maintenance than you might be use to. My hair must be washed daily or at least every couple of days...my daughter's once a week (at most). I use a deep conditioner once a month - she must use it daily.
Fear of judgment from the community and others can cause many people to avoid finding resources for a black child hairstyles. Don't let fear stand in the way of making your little girl feel proud of her natural curls. Keep in mind, braiding is a GREAT BONDING activity.
I spent thirty minutes in front of the computer watching this video and braiding my four year old's hair. She loved it, and I felt proud to have taken the initiative to find styles I could create myself for her. You know what she kept saying, "Mommy that's you..and that's me!" This is an awesome resource created by another adoptive mother!
