creating memories of the past in the safety of the present
Information is gold when you are adopted. Every tiny piece is precious. All the information pieces together in a way that helps your child make sense of, and ultimately feel good, about his/her history.
An Adoption LifeBook is somewhat like a scrapbook, a LifeBook is a detailed outline of the child's life. A LifeBook is a record of an adoptee’s life that uses words, photos, your child’s artwork, computer graphics, and memorabilia.
Through a LifeBook, a child can feel more complete and have a deeper understanding of why their life's journey has taken a rough turn. It helps the younger child feel as if the new family isn't trying to replace the first family and give them a sense of belonging.
But it’s more than a life story. It is a unique opportunity for parents to honor every minute of their child’s life.
Creating your first LifeBook TIPS:
It is child-centered and therefore generally starts at the child’s birth and continues with pages about:
* the birth mother and father * the place from which they came (town or country) * the reasons leading up to being placed for adoption * the time they spent in foster care or in an orphanage * people that provided care during the transitional time
Other page ideas could include: "Where I was born," "My Adoption Day," "My First Parents," "My Heritage," "Why I Came into Foster Care," or "My Dreams for the Future."
It usually ends with placement in the new home. It can also include pages about legal documents or court appearances, referral pictures and medical information, and other events or milestones occurring prior to joining the adopting family. Many parents create a book while waiting during the adoption process.
